Gorropu gorge – experienced hikers only
A unique hiking tour in the most characteristic mountains of Sardinia.
The Gorroppu Gorge is notorious for the magnificence of its narrow and towering walls. Imagine a narrow canyon, clustered by white boulders and surrounded by looming overhanging walls. The difference in height from the bottom to the top of the canyon is 488 meters, making it one of the deepest and narrowest canyons in Europe. Our guided tour will traverse the entire canyon, entering one side and exiting the opposite, climbing boulders and fixed ropes.
Although the Flumineddu River seems quiet and harmless, it is the real plowing agent. The furious storms that often wash out the Supramonte merge into it and gather tremendous strength. The result is occasional flash floods that can even change the morphology of the river.
Once inside the Gorropu gorge words become superficial. Nature requires calm and silent admiration
Guided hiking tour of the Gorropu Gorge, for experienced hikers only
This hiking tour of the Gorropu gorge is not the classical and easy hike most people do, but a thorough adventure to cross it entirely and climb back from the opposite side. This trekking requires the use of a harness and rope to abseil into the riverbed, and a Via Ferrata kit to overcome a set of underground pools and exit the canyon.
Starting from the parking space at Genna Silana, located 1000 meters above sea level, we will descend the classical path to the entrance of the canyon Gorropu. This path descends a total of 600 meters passing through thick oak and strawberry tree forests. Although charcoal burners cut down most of the Sardinian forests, the ones on this mountain were lucky enough to be spared. Each opening of the forest presents great views over the valley Oddoene, split by the river Flumineddu and cultivated with vine and olive trees.
At the entrance of the canyon, one must linger to admire the mesmerizing landscape, the emerald waters, and the white limestone boulders. The tour into the gorge itself lasts about one hour. Most people stop halfway through the canyon, where the boulders require minimum agility and climbing skills to be topped up.
We will walk to the very end of the Gorropu gorge, climbing on the boulders, until we reach the final meanders of the canyon. Nevertheless, it is at the exit of the canyon where our real adventure starts! We will climb up a scree to find the remains of bronze-age huts, traverse an exposed spur with the aid of fixed ropes and reach the wildest side of the canyon. A short rope abseil ushers the group to a set of tunnels dug by the river, where we shall use a via Ferrata to walk over some spectacular underground pools.
At the end of these technical passages, we can remove our harnesses and get ready for the lengthy and astonishing way up toward Cuccuttos peak. The initial part is so steep that we shall scramble on many passages. Anyhow, the view is so amazing that rewards any effort made. We will walk through a landscape so remote from any human contamination, where you can perceive the rhythm of nature flowing slowly for millions of years. From the top of Punta Cucuttos, we can take a peek over the canyon to contemplate the magnitude of the rock walls that surround the Gorropu gorge.
