Tavolara trekking & via ferrata

hiking to the top of tavolara: an unparalleled viewpoint over the Sardinian coast

Trekking, Via Ferrata, sea, nature, and an immense panorama: trekking to the summit of Tavolarais an unforgettable adventure.

The hike to reach Punta Cannone, the summit of Tavolara merges a combination of narrow paths, wide views and unspoiled nature. We will cross juniper forests, walk gently on exposed passages and scramble over screes. The itinerary ends by the wide rock wall located under the highest peak of the island, where our tour continues by climbing up the Via Ferrata Normale di Tavolara. This is a simple and uncomplicated passage protected by a steel cable. It is suitable for beginners too, provided they do not have an excessive fear of the height.

During the last centuries, the island of Tavolara evolved from being a shelter for Corsairs to become an independent kingdom, owned by a poor family of fishermen. It may sound weird, and the story continues with many unpredictable plot twists. Our guides will tell you all about the rise and fall of the family Bertoleoni and their opponents: the aristocratic family Marzano.

The destination of our tour is the summit of Tavolara, which raises to 560 meters above sea level. From the top of the island, we will admire distant beaches such as La Cinta and Cala Brandinchi, the archipelago of La Maddalena and even the coast and the mountains of Corsica. The smaller islands of Molara and Molarotto complete a wonderful scenario that needs no further explanation.

Due to the summer heat, we will meet very early and walk all our way up in the shade. This is why we meet at 6:45 at the port of Porto San Paolo, where our boat will sail towards Tavolara. The sailing takes about 20 minutes, and we will start our hike as soon as we’ll land on the island. After a short and easy walk our path enters a steep scree, where the adventure starts. We shall follow an ancient path until reaching the vertical walls of Punta Cannone. At this point, we will wear our harness, via Ferrata set and approach the Via Ferrata Normale di Tavolara: a 100 meters long exposed passage protected with fixed ropes and steel cables.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

nascosto

How do you get to the summit of Tavolara?

There are no roads to the top of Tavolara. The only way to reach the summit is by walking a steep path and engaging with the via Ferrata that leads to the top. Our tour runs on the classic and most panoramic via Ferrata. Our tours retrace the ancient paths that made the history of the island, passing for the easiest passage on the terminal rock wall.

How hard is the trekking to Tavolara?

The trekking to reach the summit of Tavolara is fairly hard, but accessible to anyone in good physical shape. Starting from sea level we will walk to the very top of the island at 567 meters above sea level. The path is really uneven and with many loose rocks. We will walk on scree and in many parts we will have to scramble and even use fixed ropes to progress. It is fundamental not to have irrational fears such as acrophobia or agoraphobia, and be ready for a challenge and get tired.

What should I wear on the trekking to Tavolara?

You should wear comfortable clothes, appropriate to the season. In the summertime, it is best to wear a technical t-shirt and shorts. Cotton shirts get wet and won’t dry out in time. It is necessary to wear hiking shoes with a rigid sole. The trekking lasts almost 5 hours trek (including return). Have 2 liters of water, some food to eat at the top, sunscreen lotion, and a hat. We recommend a soft-shell jacket as it is often windy on top.

Is this the Via Ferrata degli Angeli?

No, this is not the Via Ferrata degli Angeli. Our tour follows the easiest trekking to Punta Cannone, on the ancient path created by the limestone burners. The Via Ferrata Degli Angeli is very hard and it is unthinkable to lead groups, especially in the summer as it faces south and has no shade at all. If you’d like to do the Via Ferrata degli Angeli you can send us an email. Be aware that it is unfeasible during the summer due to the extreme heat.
