Canyoning Bacu Padente

From the ridges of Supramonte mountains, 4 thrilling abseils to the crystal clear Sardinian sea

The descent of the Bacu Padente canyon, instead of along the riverbed, takes place on a thin and extremely panoramic rocky ridge located between the canyon and the sea. From the top of the ridge the route develops with 4 rope descents up to 30 meters high and a passage inside a cave to reach the opposite side of the ridge.

The Bacu Padente route is very unusual and in fact calling it canyoning or canyoning is not really correct, being more of a series of rope descents without the slightest presence of water (other than that of the sea). Suspended on a narrow ledge, the route alternates very short stretches of walking and long rope descents.

Starting from a height of 200 meters above sea level, the Bacu Padente descents lead directly to the sea. From every point the view extends over the Gulf of Orosei with glimpses of the crystalline sea of the Piscine di Venere cove. If the adventure of descents and cave routes is not enough, at the end of the descents it is possible to take an acrobatic detour for a guided visit to the Grotta del Fico. The cave can only be visited with a guided tour and is open only during the summer period.

Meeting point

Our meeting point for the canyon Bacu Padente is on the plateau Golgo, in front of the church of Saint Peter (see the location on the map). Anyhow, if you choose the option of boat return to the port of Santa Maria Navarrese, then also our meeting point will be in the port of Santa Maria Navarrese.

Approach and return

Our meeting is on the Golgo plateau, in the municipality of Baunei. From here we will continue on a dirt road, which in 30 minutes leads to the start of the path to Bacu Padente.

From the parking lot, in 30 minutes on foot we will reach the start of the first descent, and from here it will be a succession of unparalleled views and emotions. The return journey begins with a short but very steep climb and some easy climbing passages. From here we will connect to the Selvaggio Blu path and follow a mule track that crosses the dense holm oak forest until it brings us back to the starting point (1 hour in total).

How hard is the canyon Bacu Padente?

The rope abseiling of the canyon Bacu Padente is one of the easiest activities in Sardinia. From our starting point or our path, we will walk downhill for about 30 minutes on a very uneven path. Once we will arrive at our first abseiling point, we will start rope maneuvers and for the next three hours we will be busily abseiling. There are only very short walks from an abseil to the next.

At the end of the trail, if you choose the walking return (as opposed to boat transfer), we will walk up a very steep and uneven path. There will also be a 15 meters climb, which our guide will equip with a fixed rope. From the sea to the car it will take less than 90 minutes.

What do I need?

Technical equipment

  • Harness
  • Helmet
  • Via ferrata kit

The via ferrata kit is necessary as the guide may install handrails to safely reach the descent harness.

If you do not have these items, you can request to rent them when booking the activity

Clothing

You should wear comfortable clothing suitable for the season. Hiking shoes are necessary, preferably with rigid soles. Although we will not walk much, the terrain is very rough and the walk from the sea to the cars takes up to 90 minutes.

We also recommend bringing a windbreaker.

Food

It is essential to have a packed lunch and at least two liters of water per person.

Visits to the Grotta del Fico

Of course, Grotta del Fico is managed by a local company and only opens during the summer. The entrance ticket costs €10 and the visit lasts about 30 minutes.

The entrance ticket to Grotta del Fico is not included in the price. If Grotta del Fico is open, and if the group wants to visit it, we will have to notify them in advance of our arrival and the ticket will be purchased directly at the entrance to the cave.

The cost of the ticket is €10 unless the cooperative that manages the cave changes.

Getting to Grotta del Fico: if the group has chosen to visit the cave, we will change our final descent, choosing one that leads directly to the entrance pier to the cave. However, the return from Grotta del Fico requires a very delicate traverse on a rock face one meter from the water. At the end of the traverse, you enter a small cave where the last descent of the classic Bacu Padente route ends.

Return by boat

At the end of our itinerary, whether or not you visit the Grotta del Fico, it is always possible to organize the return by dinghy to the port of Santa Maria Navarrese. In this way you can avoid the long walk back and enjoy a beautiful tour of the coast of Baunei, admiring the mountains you have just descended from a new perspective. The transfer by dinghy from the Grotta del Fico to the port lasts about an hour and certainly represents the best conclusion to a beautiful day.

If you decide to book the return by dinghy, our meeting point will be the port of Santa Maria Navarrese, where an off-road vehicle will take us to the Bacu Padente starting point. The transfer, partly on asphalt road and partly on a dirt road, lasts about an hour. To book the return via dinghy, you will find a return option when paying for the tour.

This return has an additional fixed price, which includes both the off-road transfer from Santa Maria Navarrese and the dinghy transfer from the arrival point to the sea.
