S’Istrada Longa

FOLLOWING THE STEPS OF THE BRAVEST MOUNTAIN SHEPHERDS

Deep canyons, gigantic crags and arduous accesses to the sea: this is the Supramonte. An ancient land, forsaken and wild, Sardinia is rich in history and legends. Its nature is so peculiar and varied that many consider it a continent in miniature.

Visiting the territory of Baunei and not walking S’istrada Longa is almost a sacrilege. This itinerary speaks the life of these mountains and of the people who dwelled here for centuries. It is the place where silences, voices, shapes and perfumes merge in a distilled essence of nature.

Century-old oaks and Yew trees create the natural frame for a canvas painted with the bright colours of glorious peony, foxglove and helichrysum flowerings. Pointing the nose to the sky one cannot spot any white airplane lines but circles sketched by golden eagles and kestrels, pierced by rapid hawks nose-diving to their prey.

Ancient passages created by shepherds, used to steer their flocks away from cliffs, will lead us to the bottom of a woody canyon, down to the enormous arch S’Arcada Manna. On the other side of the arch, there’s only one way to climb up the parallel canyon. This is a thin ledge found at about 50 metres of height, adorned with young juniper trees and a view that can take your breath away.

Walking on this passageway, so narrow and exposed, feels like crossing a Tibetan bridge. It gets really narrow on some parts, offering adrenaline rushes and spectacular views of the canyon below.

Important note about this itinerary

S’Istrada Longa is mostly famous for its long and exposed ledge. It is located halfway up the side of a very high and vertical cliff. The ledge gets as narrow as 40cm and participants should use their hands to lean against the wall.

It is paramount that all participants do not suffer any form of anxiety, vertigoacrophobia or agoraphobia.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

nascosto

How dangerous is the hike over s'istrada longa?

The exposed ledge at S’Istrada Longa is about 650 feet long. Its thinnest passages are as narrow as 2 feet only. Falling from the ledge to the bottom of the canyon is lethal.

That said, it is obvious that guides and groups pay maximum attention when passing over the ledge. Our guides will provide all necessary help, without burdening participants with excessive worries.

The rest of the hiking tour includes steep scree and walking among rocks and boulders, but has no major difficulties.

Our most feared injury is ankle sprains. We shall pay attention to where we place our feet, as retreating on one foot can be really challenging.

How hard is the hike?

The trekking to descend the canyon Bacu Orruargiu and walk on the ledge Istrada longa is fairly tiring but suitable for anyone in good physical shape.

It is fundamental not to have irrational fears such as acrophobia or agoraphobia, and be ready for a challenge and get tired.

What should I wear?

It is necessary to wear hiking shoes with a rigid sole. You should wear comfortable clothes, appropriate to the season. In the summertime, it is best to wear a polyester t-shirt and shorts. Cotton shirts get wet and won’t dry out in time.

The hiking tour lasts about 6 hours, it is fundamental to have a packed lunch and at least 2 litres of water per person.

We recommend a soft-shell jacket as it is often windy.
