Via ferrata della Regina

One of the easiest and most scenig via Ferrata in Sardinia.

Della Regina is the easiest and most accessible Via Ferrata in Sardinia. Far away from the chaos and the crowded beaches, the medieval village of Monteleone Rocca Doria is removed from the mass tourism that is in Alghero and Bosa. The silence of the narrow streets, the calm of the lake and the peaceful view of the hills around the town make it a unique place, isolated in time and surrounded by serenity.

The VIa Ferrata della Ragina is perfect for families with kids and a starting point for those who never tried a Via Ferrata before. The Via Ferrata Della Regina is located on the north side of a large crag, on shade for the best part of the day and thus accessible also during the hottest months. The Via Ferrata Della Regina starts with a funny filet, that is a sort of cobweb made of steel cables, and a long vertical ladder. This may be the hardest part of all, where our guides will provide precious help to those who may fear the height. The Via Ferrata also includes an exciting 15 meters Tibetan bridge and passages on panoramic ledges.

Although easy, the Via Ferrata della Regina is truly fascinating and offers a unique view on the lake Temo and the gentle hills that link Sassari to Alghero. Starting from the little hamlet of Monteleone Rocca Doria it takes only 20 minutes to reach the via ferrata, passing from the old tuff quarry and the base of the large crags above which the hamlet was built.

How hard is the Via Ferrata della Regina?

The hardest part of the Via Ferrata della Regina is the starting bit. It starts with a vertical and challenging filet (that's a sort of metal cobweb). At the end of the filet, there is a long series of metal steps on a slightly overhanging wall. It requires good strength and no fear of height. And that's not all. There is also a 10 meters horizontal traverse on the same overhanging wall. It may be only 50 meters from the start, but this will feel like having done a mile!

On the last leg of the Via Ferrata there is also an exciting passage on a 15 meters long Tibetan bridge. The total length of the Via Ferrata della Regina is about 500 meters, with a total vertical gain of 60 meters. The itinerary is built in a circular way, returning to the same starting point after about 3 hours of adventure.

Why doing the Via Ferrata della Regina in the late afternoon?

The Via Ferrata della Regina is exposed to the northwest, thus on the shade the whole day long. Therefore, it is possible to climb it any time of the day without fearing a sunstroke.

Anyhow, we prefer the late afternoon as it is possible to witness a majestic sunset over the Temo lake. It is a view without equals, one that cannot be found on any other Via Ferrata in Sardinia.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

nascosto

Is the Via Ferrata della Regina suitable for anyone?

No, the via ferrata della Regina is not suitable for anyone. Although it is marked as an easy Via Ferrata, it is still a Via Ferrata, which is an adventurous and exhausting activity. It is not necessary to have any previous experience or particular training, but it is fundamental to be in good physical shape and not to fear height.

To climb up the via Ferrata you need good control of your body balance and dexterity in managing your security kit, even in the steepest and hardest parts. The initial part of the Via Ferrata della Regina is slightly overhanging. It is necessary to have good arm strength to climb step after step.

Can I participate if I have no experience?

Tricky question, it depends… If you are in good physical shape and have no fear of height you can participate. Our guide will teach you how to safely progress on a Via Ferrata and follow you along the entire itinerary, making sure you are always doing the correct things.

What should I wear to participate in the via ferrata?

You should wear comfortable clothes, appropriate to the season. In the summertime, it is best to wear a technical t-shirt and shorts. Cotton shirts get wet and won’t dry out in time. It is necessary to wear hiking shoes with a rigid sole. The trekking lasts almost 5 hours trek (including return). Have 2 liters of water, some food to eat at the top, sunscreen lotion, and a hat. We recommend a soft-shell jacket as it is often windy.

Is this the Via Ferrata del Cabirol?

No, this is not the Via Ferrata del Cabirol. Unfortunately, the Via Ferrata del Cabirol (located north of Alghero) was vandalized in 2018 and the local administration has no intention to fix it. There are troubles linked to the site where it was built, as is a natural reserve, near a military restricted zone, and there is a risk of rock falls… We all loved the Via Ferrata del Cabirol, but we have to accept it is gone forever 🙁

Do you provide all the necessary equipment?

Yes, of course. We provide all the necessary equipment to enjoy the Via Ferrata della Regina. Free of charge. We provide harnesses, helmets and via Ferrata kits.

We recommend having a pair of gloves. They are not fundamental, but useful to preserve the skin of your hands.
